The story

The University of Milan, known as La Statale, was officially born on 8 December 1924. Its founder and first Rector was Luigi Mangiagalli, who started the process in 1923.

Its main seat is the Ca' Granda on Via Festa del Perdono, a hospital for the poor begun in 1456 under Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti, to a design by Filarete. Air raids in 1943 almost destroyed it. After the Second World War it was handed to the university, restoration began in 1951, and in 1958 it became the university's main seat.

Its English-taught Medicine program, the International Medical School, is split across two kinds of sites. The first two years run at LITA, the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Advanced Technologies in Segrate. Years three to six are clinical and run in hospitals, with Niguarda hospital in Milan as the reference hospital.

The school lists more than a dozen partner hospitals and research institutes, among them the Policlinico on Via Francesco Sforza, the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori and the Centro Cardiologico Monzino.

Who studies here

La Statale has 31 departments and 62 research centres. Besides the city-centre seat and the Città Studi area, it has campuses in Sesto San Giovanni for language mediation, in Lodi for Veterinary Medicine and in Edolo for mountain studies. The university plans to move its science departments to MIND, the Milan Innovation District, by 2030.

Medicine is taught in English at Milan. The International Medical School is a six-year program, taught exclusively in English, with lessons given by Italian professors and visiting professors from European and North American universities.

Teaching mixes lectures with small-group work. The school names problem-based learning, clinical case discussions and early experience in research laboratories as features of the course.

The school runs an Erasmus Desk for students who want an exchange period at another university.

The city

Milan has the most extensive underground network in Italy, with the most stations, lines and passengers per year, according to the Lombardy tourism site. The first line, the red M1, opened in 1964.

The city also has seventeen tram lines, 115 km in total, which the tourism site calls the largest tram network in Italy. Some of the trams still running were built between 1928 and 1932.

How admission works for international students

Non-EU students living abroad must submit a pre-enrolment application on Universitaly. Acceptance there does not give a right to complete enrolment.

Undergraduate programs require an admission test or a skills assessment. Calls are published every year. Visa applicants to a Master's apply within the deadline set in the call.

Learnium keeps one guide per test. The overview of Italian admission tests shows how they compare.

Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine in English are covered on our Medicine in Italy page.

Fees

Students from outside the EU whose household lives and earns abroad pay a fixed amount, set by country of origin and type of enrolment. For 2026/27 the university sorts the world's countries into three groups, A, B and C, listed in an annex to its fee regulation. In tuition area B the second instalment runs from €256 for group A to €4,101.12 for group C, plus a regional tax of €130 to €190 and €16 of stamp duty. Asylum seekers, refugees and students with other forms of international protection do not pay tuition.
