The story

Milano-Bicocca is a young university. It began as a second hub of the University of Milan. In September 1993 the city chose the Bicocca district for it, and on 10 June 1998 a ministerial decree established the second University of Milan. A decree of 12 March 1999 gave it the name University of Milano-Bicocca.

The campus stands on old industrial land in the north-east of Milan, near Greco Pirelli railway station. The Bicocca district was once home to companies such as Pirelli and Breda, and the university became part of a redevelopment coordinated by the architect Vittorio Gregotti.

The English-taught Medicine and Surgery degree is run in partnership with the University of Bergamo and the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital, and it is based in Bergamo. The course page says clinical mentoring starts from the second year, and that teaching is built around problem-based learning in seven integrated body systems.

Who studies here

The university sorts its Bachelor's and Master's degrees into seven areas: Economics and Statistics, Educational Sciences, Law, Medicine and Surgery, Psychology, Sciences and Sociology.

Students with a qualification from outside Italy apply to its Bachelor's and Master's courses through a platform called Apply.UNIMIB, which the university built for them. Medicine is the English-taught single-cycle degree: six years, limited places, entry by a national admission test.

The city

The university's address is in Milan, but the English Medicine degree is based in Bergamo, so a Medicine applicant should plan for Bergamo as well as Milan.

Milan is one of two cities in Lombardy with an underground railway, and its network is the most extensive in Italy. The Milan underground dates from 1964, and the network now has almost 100 km of track and 113 stations. The city also has seventeen tram lines, 115 km in all, the largest tram network in Italy.

How admission works for international students

For Bachelor's and Master's programs, applicants from outside the EU who live abroad apply on Apply.UNIMIB. They then make a pre-enrolment application for a study visa on the Universitaly portal, which the university calls compulsory for all non-EU applicants. The university adds that its acceptance does not give any right to a visa: embassies and consulates decide that.

Open-admission and limited-seat programs each have their own call and deadline, so read the call for the program you want.

Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine in English are covered on our Medicine in Italy page.

Fees

For 2026/27, international students pay a fixed all-inclusive yearly contribution that depends on the country of residence and on the area of the course. It runs from 200 to 3,600 euros a year. Students whose country of residence is in group 1, which includes Pakistan, India, China, Egypt and Nigeria, pay 200 euros in area A and 300 euros in area B, and that is their cost. An international student is defined as having non-Italian citizenship, an entry qualification obtained abroad and residence abroad.

Everyone also pays a first instalment of 146 euros, which covers stamp duty and an advance on the regional tax.

A foreign student who lives in Italy is not in this group: that student pays the contribution set by family income and has to present an ISEE.
