The story

The University of Bari was established by royal decree on 30 September 1923 and officially inaugurated on 15 January 1925. Its first faculty was Medicine and Surgery, with schools of obstetrics and pharmacy that grew out of older schools in the Reale Liceo delle Puglie. Law followed in 1925. In 2006 a second Faculty of Sciences and Law was set up at Taranto. In May 2008 the Academic Senate voted unanimously to name the university after Aldo Moro. The 2010 reform abolished the faculties, and a later statute change set up twenty-four departments.

The University of Bari Aldo Moro is in Bari, the capital of Apulia. Its central administration sits in the Palazzo Ateneo on Piazza Umberto I, where the international students office is also based.

Medicine and Surgery in English is run by the Interdisciplinary Department of Medicine, inside the School of Medicine. The teaching site is the Policlinico hospital in Bari.

The course runs for six years and 360 credits, and all its teaching is in English.

The university today

Bari's Medicine and Surgery course taught in English belongs to the LM-41 degree class, a single-cycle degree. Access is limited: a fixed number of places is set each year, and applicants sit an entrance test. Non-EU applicants living abroad must pass an Italian test at admission unless they hold B2, so we do not place them on this course.

Programs taught in English

We list 1 Bachelor's and 5 Master's at Bari taught entirely in English.

The city

Bari is the capital of Apulia, a port and university city on the Adriatic. The national tourism portal calls it the second largest city in southern Italy. The old town, Bari Vecchia, sits inside the ancient walls on a peninsula between the city's two ports. It has the Basilica of San Nicola, which holds the relics of the city's patron saint, and the Norman-Swabian Castle.

The relics of St Nicholas arrived in Bari in 1087. The new city outside the old walls was built in 1813 under Joachim Murat, and Bari joined the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. Along the sea, the Lungomare is a promenade for walking, with restaurants serving local dishes.

How admission works for international students

Everyone with a foreign school or university title must first have the title evaluated on the university's Apply online! platform. This applies to EU and non-EU applicants, in Italy or abroad.

Non-EU applicants living abroad then pre-enrol on the ministry's Universitaly portal to get a type D study visa. The Universitaly application comes after the Apply online! application has a positive evaluation, and the same documents are uploaded again. Pre-enrolment does not secure a visa appointment, and visas are issued only by the Italian diplomatic and consular offices.

Limited-access programs have their own calls with their own tests and deadlines, published on the university's admission-test pages. At enrolment, for English-taught programs, the university asks for an English certificate or proof of at least one school year taught in English, and points to each course regulation for the details.

Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine in English are covered on our Medicine in Italy page.

Fees

Students whose family lives abroad and has income and assets only abroad pay one fixed yearly contribution set by country group, whatever their citizenship. For 2026/27 it runs from 0 to 2,600 euros a year. For students from the particularly poor countries (group A, for example Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Nepal) the fixed fee is 0 euros, and that is the cost. Group B countries such as India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Egypt pay 500 euros. The fixed fee replaces the income-document route (ISEE parificato).

Stamp duty and the regional tax for the right to university study are added to the fixed fee.

How we help

At Bari the order matters: the Apply online! evaluation first, then Universitaly after a positive result. We keep those steps and the visa in one plan and prepare the documents Bari asks for. If you are weighing Bari against another university, we compare the two with you.
